Hypothyroidism, also known as an under-active thyroid, is a common yet dreadful condition where the thyroid gland is not able to produce a sufficient amount of thyroid hormones. This lack of hormones upsets the natural balance in bodies, resulting in a lack of energy and elevated feelings of fatigue. Hypothyroidism is often associated with cases of unexplained weight gain since metabolism is dependent on thyroid hormones. According to Mayo Clinic, other symptoms include:
- Dry skin
- Puffy face
- Hoarseness
- Muscle weakness
- Pain, stiffness or swelling in joints
- Depression
- Impaired memory
Causes
The thyroid gland can fail to produce enough thyroid hormones for a variety of reasons including autoimmune disease, medication, congenital disease, or pituitary disorders. However, the common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide stem from an insufficient diet—tyrosine malnutrition and iodine deficiency. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2 billion people around the world suffer from hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency. Those who do not eat Iodine rich foods such as fish, kelp, or ionized salt most likely do not get the needed 150 milligrams of Iodine. Without this Iodine, the thyroid gland cannot sufficiently produce the much needed hormones that control metabolism. Iron, calcium, and selenium intake can also affect the thyroid according to Healthline. Diets that lack diverse healthy foods most likely do not get these needed vitamins or minerals.
Various Health Benefits of Thyroid Supplements
Many people who do not have the time to prepare and eat foods high in iodine, iron, calcium, selenium, and tyrosine often turn to thyroid supplements in order to get these needed vitamins and minerals. People often want to try a natural methods of treatment rather than spending money going to doctors and paying for prescription medicines. That’s not to say that if patients have a serious condition, they should not go to a doctor. Definitively do so. For nutritional deficiencies, however, thyroid supplements will greatly help. Many consumers report weight loss as well as feelings of energy and happiness. As seen on reviews, blog sites, and marketplaces such as Amazon, people say that just feel like their old selves due to the essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids found in many thyroid supplements. However, it is also important to make sure your thyroid supplement is a good one that will help make a difference in your health. The market is littered with sub-par thyroid complexes. Unsafe Thyroid Supplements
However, not all supplements are created equally. Some manufacturers have decided to take the controversial step of including raw thyroid bovine (cattle) glands in their products. Many experts seem to recommended avoiding supplements that contain glands for two primary reasons. Firstly, these thyroid supplements may contain actual thyroid T3 or T4 hormones. According to a study published in the Thyroid Journal, all the supplements that contained bovine glands, ended up testing positive for thyroid hormones. Patients should only take prescription medicine when ordered by a doctor and definitely not in over the counter supplements. Otherwise, as stated in the study, patients could expose themselves to the risk of alterations in thyroid levels even to the point of developing iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis.
Thyroid supplements that contain bovine glands can be dangerous.
The second reason experts recommended avoiding bovine thyroid glands is that the cattle might have had Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease. This is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that currently has no cure. Scientists say that those who directly ingest cattle tissue are at a lot more risk. In fact, the FDA issued warnings in 2000 as well as more recently in 2011, urging consumers to be extremely cautious and to avoid supplements that derive bovine from high risk countries. Although Mad Cow Disease is very rare in the United states, warnings like this are certainly not something to just avoid; the Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease has already killed over 200 people worldwide.
A vegetarian or vegan diet and NO meds is the best way to recover your health, esp. after being a drinker and big time meat eater! Really! Porn Again! 🙂
If you decide to include Bovine Thyroid to help your health, be sure to choose products that buy their dessicated thyroid from clean countries like New Zealand, which has never had Mad Cow disease. Note that the article above clearly said that any threat comes from countries which have suffered from Mad Cow disease. Don’t be scared off from Bovine Thyroid.
hello, what about explicit free-tyroxine thyroid supplements?
shouldn’t they be enough sure to have the complete or nearest complete quantity of hormones removed?
… since there are other brands which do not declare it, I suppose to have sufficient trust to use the free-tyroxine ones… with the related feedbacks of the users….
Hi Sebast,
I have not heard or seen those kinds of supplements. It would require a high degree of trust.
I just went to have my Canadian Erfa desiccated thyroid prescription renewed only to be told that it is unavailable. My doctor prescribed another desiccated thyroid from a compounding pharmacy here in Ontario but the formulation is made from bovine thyroid and NOT porcine like Erfa is. I took one capsule (15 ml) today and it spiked my BP….she assured me this product was identical to Erfa DT but it is most definitely not the same. If I stop taking it, then what????
